As we welcome in 2023 we look at what’s next for the world of telecoms.
With 02 and Virgin now firmly joined, and mergers in Hungary and Albania, as well as Sony Ericsson doubling down on its cloud investment despite heavy losses, there’s a lot of big team ups and a lot of promises in an improvement of 5G connectivity…
However BT announced this week something which feels more suited for a dystopian movie, or Silicon Valley and Dubai…
That’s right there has been a multimillion pound investment promise into BT creating a Drone Super highway, titled “Project Skyway” a dedicated 165km corridor between Oxford, Cambridge and Coventry.

For several years people have toyed with the concept of drones becoming part of the ecosystem of delivery services. But this seems to be the first foray into the idea by a telecoms company, especially one of this size.
What does this mean for the telecoms industry along the M4 corridor and West Midlands? Well it’s already an area rich with research and IT businesses… but now with the Behemoth that is BT, along with its family member EE investing in drones… that £5 million, is surely the first droplet in new branch in their river.
If telecoms has interested you as a career before, but you haven’t been interested in cabling below ground, then you’ll be glad to see there’s a lot more than just fibre, there’s a chance to get involved at the birth of Project Skyway.
