It’s no secret now that we are desperately short of job candidates across several sectors in the UK job market, and if you haven’t noticed the shelves looking empty, you definitely will in the near future.

Whether this is Covid, Brexit, a changing desire in the workforce or lack of training, or a cocktail of all of these things is a topic not worth the time discussing… what is important, is what happens next!

It’s a strange place to be in, we have a slightly higher level of unemployment than before the pandemic, but also a much higher supply of jobs…

It should be easy right? Lots of jobs to fill, and lots of people needing jobs? Is this a case of the statistics not telling the full story? Or the signs of a new set of criteria for job seekers and a change in the desirability of sectors?

Whilst there still is a drastic shortage in drivers, health workers and also retail workers and chefs, there are also other sectors significantly in demand.

Software engineers, project managers, civil engineers, IT architects and system planners or graphic designers.. essentially, if you’re looking to work in IT, Engineering or Telecoms, then the future has never been so bright for you!

It’s often easy to miss these sorts of roles whereas roles like drivers and care assistants are marketed quite publicly, it’s often far more difficult to know where to look for the more technical roles. However when there are more than 100,000 roles available across this sector it’s worth the hunt.

That’s why it falls to recruiters to not only find the jobs, but to also find those elusive candidates, especially the ones with transferable skills they were unaware they possessed.
