So, you spend all year moaning, “I can’t stand this rain, why is it so cold? I don’t want to buy more jumpers!” Then, all of a sudden, we get the feeling of the mid-twenties on the weather channel… Brilliant, beer gardens, cornetto’s and definitely no top buttons!!
But then, it hits the 30’s, normally we’d love it, we pray for it all year, but when it comes to the weather, we Brits seem to be a nation suffering from weather amnesia, just as Snow defeats us as soon as it appears. We forget that we are not sat on a resort in Europe, this is Britain, aircon is limited to Supermarkets and we panic.
So, the shops have run out of all the entry level fans, party ice and ice lollies have all but disappeared from supermarkets, and we’re starting to wish Brexit meant the sun can’t cross the channel.Stay calm, ask your boss if you can wear different uniform, most will already be suggesting this. Avoid sugary drinks, keep a bottle of water with you at all times and expect to go through this a few times during work. Make sure you do not miss breakfast, the heat might take away your appetite, so don’t lose your energy during the day, the heat doesn’t happen.
Say yes to the beer garden, you’re working hard, but find some shade, remember what they say about mad dogs and Englishmen? If I see another Snapchat from some burnt friend I think I’ll be safe in the knowledge that suncream is still in stock. Put sun cream on, that’s cream, not baby oil, BBQ only applies to food not your skin.
Try to enjoy the weather, be sensible walking your dogs, and leave multiple bowls of water for them, and regardless of how many windows are open, don’t leave them in the car. Think about how hot your car was when you left at 7 this morning… Yes, exactly, not good.
For the fitness fanatics, don’t avoid your training just go early in the morning or in the evening, try to use an air-conditioned gym or run somewhere shaded, and take plenty of water, remember if you feel thirsty you’re already dehydrated.
So, enjoy the sun, respect the sun, and remember it will be gone soon so make the most!
